Los Lunas Child Find Preschool Program

Child Find?

The purpose of Child Find screening it to identify children with SEVERE delays in one or more of the following areas:

  • Speech—how the child says words. Do others understand the child?
  • Language—how the child understands what is said to them and/or how the child tells you their wants and needs.
  • Motor—how the child uses their hands to hold things, stack blocks and color and/or how they walk, run, jump and kick a ball.
  • Behavior/Social-Emotional—how the child gets along with other children and adults.

Therefore, if you have concerns about your child in one or more of these areas….read on.

Who can be screened?

  •  Children who live in the Los Lunas Schools boundaries.
  •  Children between the ages of three and five (children who turn three during the current school year may also be screened).

If your child is younger than three, call La Vida Felicidad (505) 865-4651

If your child turns five before Sept. 1st or is older than five, call your designated home elementary school.

The Screening Process

  • The screening is completed by professionals trained in speech, language, motor, and/or social/emotional and behavioral areas. Each child will have a hearing and vision screening and then screened in the above areas.
  • If the child passes screening, this means his abilities in these areas are typical for his/her age and no further testing is needed. This ends the screening process.
  • If the child fails screening in one or more of the above areas, a more in-depth evaluation will be recommended. This evaluation will be scheduled soon after the screening date and lasts approximately two hours.
  • If results of the evaluation indicate the child has a significant delay in one or more areas, he/she will qualify for the Special Education Preschool Program located at the child’s designated elementary school.
  • If the evaluation does not indicate the child has a significant delay, he/she does not qualify for the Special Education Preschool Program. The Child Find Team will give parents suggestions to help with the child’s continued development.
