To the Los Lunas School Community:

As the Acting Superintendent of Schools, I thought it important that I re-introduce myself to the Los Lunas Community. I was the Superintendent of Schools in Los Lunas for a four-year period from 2005 to 2009, and I lived in Los Lunas for almost ten years before relocating to Albuquerque. Following my tenure in Los Lunas, I went to work for Pearson LLC, the country’s largest education vendor, managing a team of outstanding educators who worked with administrators and teachers throughout the western United States. It was an interesting glimpse into a huge array of schools from different states, with a wide range of issues; a job that certainly broadened my horizons and exposed me to some of the top educational leaders in the country.

I have been fully retired for a little over a year, enjoying my family and partaking of my hobbies and interests, but I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Los Lunas. When the Board of Education asked me to come back in an acting capacity to help to lead the district through this very difficult period of isolation and remote learning, it was an easy decision for me to make. I am not interested in a permanent position, and most importantly, I bring some knowledge of the Los Lunas Schools and the community to an acting position.

This is an extremely challenging time for all of us; we are not a country that is in any way accustomed to social isolation, and yet, it is important that our students continue with their education and do not lose the academic gains that their teachers have worked so hard to establish. The Board has charged me with assuring that the remote learning initiative, that has been most capably begun by Superintendent Sanders and her staff, continues without interruption, while we also meet the needs of our students who have participated in our breakfast and lunch programs. All of these tasks must be accomplished in a safe environment, which does not expose our staff, students, and parents to the Covid-19 virus.

Under normal circumstances, I would invite parents and community members, many of whom I already know, to stop by and say hello, but obviously this is not the time for that kind of interaction. I do invite you to contact me through email at wggibson@llschools.net or by telephone in the district office. It is my clear goal to make sure that the Los Lunas Schools continue to educate all students to be best of our ability in these trying times.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Walter Gibson
