A Title I school in New Mexico is a school that receives federal funding to help students from low-income families meet academic standards.

About Title I

  • Eligibility
Schools are eligible to use Title I funds if at least 40% of their students come from low-income families. Schools can also qualify if they serve an eligible school attendance area where less than 40% of students are from low-income families, but they must get a waiver from the New Mexico Public Education Department.

  • Purpose
    Title I funding aims to:

    • Close the achievement gap
    • Provide a high-quality education for all children
    • Supplement state and local funding

  • Services
Title I schools provide services to help students meet academic standards, including:

    • Instructional support and resources
    • Tutoring
    • Counseling
    • Family literacy
    • Computer-assisted instruction

  • Funding
The amount of Title I funding a school receives is based on poverty levels determined by the US Census Bureau. Local education agencies (LEAs) can use their own funds to fund basic services for the program.
