Ai Philosophy for Los Lunas Schools

At Los Lunas Schools, we believe in harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enrich learning, enhance collaboration, and prepare students and staff for the future. As we begin this journey, we recognize that AI’s role in education is evolving, and we are committed to working with students, educators, families, and community partners to shape a thoughtful and responsible approach. Our AI philosophy is guided by five core principles:

1. Embracing Technology

We see AI as a tool for empowerment, creativity, and efficiency. By integrating AI thoughtfully into our classrooms and operations, we strive to enhance teaching and learning experiences while maintaining a human-centered approach to education.

2. Collaborative Learning & Growth

AI has the potential to foster connections, not replace them. We encourage students and staff to engage with AI in ways that promote teamwork, problem-solving, and shared knowledge-building. AI-driven tools will be used to support educators and learners, ensuring that technology enhances—not replaces—human interaction.

3. Ethical & Responsible Use

We are committed to the ethical use of AI, ensuring that all AI applications align with our values of integrity, fairness, and transparency. Our community will be equipped with the skills to critically evaluate AI-generated content, protect privacy, and uphold digital responsibility.

4. Future-Focused Education

Preparing students for a rapidly evolving world means giving them the tools to understand, adapt to, and shape the future of AI. We will provide opportunities for students to explore AI concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and engage with emerging technologies in meaningful ways.

5. Inclusion & Equity

AI has the potential to support all learners equitably. We will work to ensure AI-driven tools provide personalized learning experiences that meet the diverse needs of all students. Additionally, we will provide educators with training on how to use AI in ways that promote inclusion, accessibility, and culturally responsive teaching. By leveraging AI responsibly, we aim to eliminate bias, expand opportunities, and create an educational environment where every student and staff member feels valued and heard.

Our Commitment to Continuous Learning

This AI philosophy is just the beginning. As we move forward, we will actively engage with our school community—seeking input, addressing concerns, and refining our approach to AI in education. By working together, we will ensure AI serves as a positive force for learning, collaboration, and equity.

The SAMR Model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) is a framework for integrating technology into education. Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, it describes four levels of technology use, from basic replacement of traditional tools (Substitution) to the creation of entirely new learning experiences previously impossible (Redefinition). SAMR helps educators move beyond simply using technology to truly transforming teaching and learning.

The TPACK Model (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) is a framework highlighting the interconnected knowledge teachers need for effective technology integration. Developed by Mishra and Koehler, it emphasizes the dynamic interplay of three core knowledge areas: Content Knowledge (what to teach), Pedagogical Knowledge (how to teach), and Technological Knowledge (how to use technology). TPACK represents the nuanced understanding at the intersection of all three, guiding educators to intentionally combine subject matter, instructional strategies, and digital tools to maximize student learning.

 

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)is a framework guiding the design of inclusive learning environments that are accessible and challenging for every learner. Based on neuroscience, UDL focuses on proactive design to reduce barriers, rather than retrofitting accommodations. It emphasizes providing Multiple Means of Engagement (the "why" of learning), Multiple Means of Representation (the "what" of learning), and Multiple Means of Action & Expression (the "how" of learning). The ultimate goal of UDL is to foster learner agency: purposeful, reflective, resourceful, authentic, strategic, and action-oriented learners.
