NMAA COVID-19 Guidelines for Participation 2020-2021

The following guidelines were created to allow for the safe participation of student-athletes during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The following guidelines are in accordance with State of New Mexico public health orders and follow best practices and recommendations from the governing body of high school activities associations, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The modifications outlined in this guide are meant to decrease potential exposure to respiratory droplets by encouraging social distancing, limiting participation in administrative tasks to essential personnel, and allowing for appropriate protective equipment. Competition during the spring semester of the 2020-2021 school year will follow these general guidelines and will be subject to change based on Governor’s orders:

  • No overnight travel
  • No consecutive-day tournaments/events
  • Masks shall be worn at all times by all persons in attendance, including participants
  • Social distancing measures shall be in place at all times other than when engaged in competition
  • Spectators are prohibited from practices
The Board of Directors met April 19 and passed two Covid policies:

1. Out of season coaching for Fall sports beyond the school day must be conducted in pods to try and minimize exposure. This will go into effect immediately until Memorial weekend.
Winter sports will move to pod workouts at the conclusion of their season.

2. Violations to Covid Safe Practices will be subject to sanctions. Sanctions may include suspensions, forfeitures, fines, and/or post season bans.

We need to do everything we can to “get to the finish line.” Two months working together will get all our athletes a chance to compete.

Spectators Now Allowed at Outdoor Sporting Events:

Football & Soccer:
Due to the NMPED public health order, which limits the capacity of outdoor sporting events, tickets will NOT be sold. Spectators will be limited. Student athletes and their family’s will get first priority. T

NO SPECTATORS - Due to the NMPED public health order.

All volleyball and football contests will be streamed live on the NFHS Network. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to stream soccer contest at this time.

Capacity allowance varies with color of county. Valencia County is currently YELLOW.

This means that schools may allow spectators as follows:

Yellow Counties:
● up to 25% capacity for an outdoor spectator area

Green Counties:
● Up to 50% capacity of an outdoor spectator area
● Up to 25% capacity of an indoor spectator area

Turquoise Counties:
● Up to 75% capacity of an outdoor spectator area
● Up to 33% capacity of an indoor spectator area

In every case, the host team’s county color governs the spectator capacity.

Warning About Potential Live Stream Scams

The NMAA office has received several inquiries regarding video streaming services that promote various high school events, but are not official partners of the New Mexico Activities Association nor our member schools.

We have found that most of these services are in fact online scams that are attempting to collect personal information and/or credit card payments. Please pass this information on to your respective community members so that they are aware not only of your official video stream broadcasts, but also to protect them from these potential scams.

If you happen to come across one of these fraudulent websites, you should report it to the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office. A link to their website is listed below.

J.P. Murrieta with the NMAA has put together this article regarding this topic.
