Esports as an NMAA Sanctioned Activity

Letter from NMAA to Athletic Directors

Athletic Directors,
As you may be aware, the NMAA Board of Directors recently voted to approve Esports as a sanctioned Activity.
Our office is still working to finalize the platform that will be used statewide along with other details surrounding the Activity, but here is some basic/tentative information:
Proposed Season: October-January (state championship in January)
Basic Format: Schools will compete against other schools throughout the regular season, with no travel as matches will be played from their own computer labs. The state championships at the end of the season will take place in a centralized location.
Team Size: Dependent upon the game(s) selected for competition, teams will be made up of 3-5 students. Schools will be able to have multiple teams for each game, but exact protocols and state qualifying procedures will be determined at a later date.
Games: Games currently being considered are League of Legends, Smite, Icons, Rocket League, & NBA 2K. Others will be discussed moving forward as well.
Classifications for State: The number of classifications/state championship trophies awarded will be dependent on the number of schools that decide to participate in Esports. Note that there will not be divisions for boys and girls as teams will/can be co-ed.
Timeline for Implementation:

*Now through mid-July – NMAA to work with NFHS Network and other entities to finalize platform and other details pertaining to the activity
*Now through July – NMAA to collect information from schools interested in starting a program
*July 31st – NMAA to provide information to schools regarding Esports during the Athletic Director’s Meeting at the NM High School Coaches Association Clinic
*August through September – NMAA to continue providing information to schools on the implementation process.
*October through January – Official NMAA Esports season.
Although this process is still in its infancy, the NMAA is excited to launch Esports in 2018-2019 and looks forward to working with our schools to bring student “gamers” into an education-based setting.
If your school has plans to take part in Esports under the NMAA umbrella in 2018-2019, or is at least considering this, please reply to this e-mail stating your level of interest. In addition, if you already have a coach/sponsor/advisor in place for this program, include the name of this individual along with his/her contact information.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need anything else regarding Esports as a sanctioned Activity here in New Mexico.
