The lab was made possible by a $100,000 grant from Meta, which was awarded in October 2020 to help the district create the lab with the purchase of innovative equipment to foster student engagement and creativity.

“Los Lunas Schools is incredibly thankful for Meta’s commitment to student learning and high levels of learning for all students,” says William Hays, the Director of Educational Technology at Los Lunas Schools.

“It’s so exciting to see the Innovation and Design Lab come to life for the students and teachers of Los Lunas Schools. STEAM education is incredibly important for students of today to be career- and college-ready, and we’re happy to help foster learning in the fields of technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, programming, robotics and more,” said David Williams, community development manager at Meta. “Collaborating on projects like this with Los Lunas Schools is core to Meta’s commitment to being a great community partner.”

Located in the Special Services building, the space is accessible to all K-12 teachers within the district and provides both educators and students a place to learn and explore various STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) initiatives and strategies. Teachers can check out equipment like microscopes, robotics, virtual reality headsets and other tools through a website created by the LLS Educational Technology Department. Teachers also receive the necessary training by digital learning coaches at Los Lunas Schools.

“The website allows all district staff to view, learn about, and check out the innovative equipment,” Hays explains. “Utilizing these tools, teachers develop lessons that are associated with the current standards they are teaching.”

The Innovation and Design Lab successfully rolled out during the 2021-2022 school year to enhance learning opportunities through hands-on and digital exploration.

The $100,000 grant was in addition to a grant of $23,600 through the Meta Community Action Grants program, which originally created the school district’s STEM Lending Library. Meta and Los Lunas Schools have been community partners since the Meta Los Lunas Data Center broke ground in 2017.
